Office chair statistics span several different measures: global musculoskeletal burden, working from home, workplace cases, manufacturing employment, wholesale activity and public-company results. The figures below keep each population, geography and measurement period explicit, while separating chair-specific evidence from broader office-furniture and health data.

Global Musculoskeletal Burden and Office Chair Context
The World Health Organization’s Musculoskeletal health fact sheet summarizes GBD 2019 estimates. These figures describe broad health conditions across populations and ages; they do not establish that office chairs caused the conditions or identify office-chair users.
| Measure | GBD 2019 estimate | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Musculoskeletal conditions | About 1.71 billion people | Worldwide |
| Years lived with disability | About 149 million YLDs | Worldwide |
| Share of global YLDs | About 17% | Worldwide |
| Low back pain | About 570 million prevalent cases | Worldwide |
| Neck pain | About 222 million people | Worldwide |
| Osteoarthritis | About 528 million people | Worldwide |

The same WHO summary gives regional totals of 441 million people in high-income countries, 427 million in the WHO Western Pacific Region and 369 million in South-East Asia with musculoskeletal conditions. Those are regional totals across conditions and ages, not office-worker prevalence.
Low back pain was responsible for 7.4% of global years lived with disability in GBD 2019. The summary also reports about 440 million people affected by fractures, associated with 26 million YLDs, and about 180 million people affected by amputations, associated with 5.5 million YLDs; neither measure is specific to seated work.
These data are useful for understanding why sitting comfort and workstation design matter to readers, but they should not be converted into a chair-attributable disease rate. The WHO figures are GBD 2019 estimates summarized in a 2022 fact sheet.
Telework and Work-from-Home Office Chair Participation
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Telework trends article uses the Current Population Survey population employed and at work during the reference week. It measures working at home for pay, including people who worked some but not all hours at home, rather than chair ownership or chair quality.
| U.S. population or status | Q1 2024 | Q1 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| People at work who teleworked | 22.9% | 19.6% |
| Workers at work with no disability | 22.8% | 19.6% |
| Workers at work age 25 and over | 24.9% | 21.5% |
| Workers at work with bachelor’s degree or higher | 40.4% | 35.2% |
Source: Telework trends, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In Q1 2024, 35.5 million U.S. people teleworked or worked at home for pay, and that count was 5.1 million higher than a year earlier. The overall telework rate was 22.9%, compared with 19.6% in Q1 2023.
Work status also mattered. Full-time U.S. workers at work had a 24.5% telework rate in Q1 2024, while part-time workers had a 15.1% rate.
Education showed a larger gap in the reported breakdown: workers at work with a bachelor’s degree or higher had a 40.4% rate in Q1 2024, versus 35.2% in Q1 2023. Workers age 25 and over had a 24.9% rate in Q1 2024, compared with 21.5% one year earlier.
U.S. Office Furniture Manufacturing Employment Statistics
BLS payroll data place office chairs inside broader industry categories. NAICS 3372 is office furniture and related-product manufacturing, so its employment totals include products beyond chairs.
| Period | NAICS 3372 payroll employment | Office-furniture/custom-architectural grouping |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 annual average | Not supplied | 60.8 thousand |
| 2023 annual average | 121.2 thousand | 60.0 thousand |
| 2022 annual average | 122.8 thousand | 59.9 thousand |
| 2021 annual average | Not supplied | 60.3 thousand |
| 2020 annual average | 127.7 thousand | 60.7 thousand |
| December 2024 | 121.4 thousand | Not supplied |
| December 2023 | 120.2 thousand | Not supplied |

NAICS 3372 employed 121.4 thousand U.S. payroll workers in December 2024, compared with 120.2 thousand in December 2023. Its annual-average employment was 121.2 thousand in 2023, 122.8 thousand in 2022 and 127.7 thousand in 2020.
A narrower supplied grouping combining NAICS 337211, 337212 and 337214 recorded 60.8 thousand payroll workers in 2024 annual-average data. The comparable figure was 60.0 thousand in 2023, 59.9 thousand in 2022, 60.3 thousand in 2021 and 60.7 thousand in 2020.
Because both measures include furniture-related products beyond office chairs, they describe manufacturing scale and employment context rather than a chair-only labor market.
Office Chair, Desk Work and Workplace Injury Data
BLS’ Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses provides a framework for examining workplace cases, but it does not identify office-chair causation. The 2023–24 tables cover qualifying cases involving days away from work, restricted activity or job transfer.
The published detailed-industry tables include the following dimensions:
- Tables for selected natures of work-related cases.
- Tables for affected body parts.
- Tables for events or exposures.
- Tables by worker age.
- Tables by days and case type.
Source: Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses Data, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
BLS also lists 2023–24 musculoskeletal-disorder tables with number, rate and median measures by injury nature. Related tables provide number, rate and median measures by affected body part.
The scope is important when interpreting office-work statistics. These are employer-reported occupational cases meeting BLS publication criteria, not all discomfort, ergonomic complaints or short-lived symptoms experienced by people who sit at desks.
The tables can support comparisons by industry, body part, case type, age and duration where a user needs qualifying occupational-case data. They should not be presented as the prevalence of back or neck pain among office-chair users.
U.S. Furniture Wholesale Sales and Payroll Statistics
Census industry data provide a wider commercial measure than office-chair retail sales. The 2024 figures are for NAICS 423210, furniture merchant wholesalers, and include products beyond office chairs.
| 2024 Census measure | Reported amount |
|---|---|
| All furniture merchant wholesalers: sales, shipments or revenue | $55,686,737 thousand |
| All furniture merchant wholesalers: annual payroll | $5,410,302 thousand |
| Wholesalers other than manufacturers’ sales branches and offices: sales or revenue | $44,070,586 thousand |
| Manufacturers’ sales branches and offices: sales or revenue | $11,616,151 thousand |
| Wholesalers other than manufacturers’ sales branches and offices: payroll | $4,911,352 thousand |
| Manufacturers’ sales branches and offices: payroll | $498,950 thousand |
Source: All Sectors: Summary Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries for Employer Firms: 2024, U.S. Census Bureau.
Furniture merchant wholesalers reported $55,686,737 thousand in 2024 sales, shipments or revenue and $5,410,302 thousand in annual payroll. Within the same classification, wholesalers other than manufacturers’ sales branches and offices reported $44,070,586 thousand in sales or revenue and $4,911,352 thousand in payroll.
Manufacturers’ sales branches and offices reported $11,616,151 thousand in sales or revenue and $498,950 thousand in payroll. The supplied Census comparison derives a 20.8% share for those branches and offices against the all-establishment sales total; that is a category comparison, not an office-chair market share.
Office Chair Industry Trends in Furniture-Company Filings
Public-company filings offer company-wide context for large furniture businesses. They are not pure office-chair market-size measures because each company sells multiple furniture and related-product categories.
| Company and period | Reported measure |
|---|---|
| MillerKnoll fiscal 2024 net sales | $3,628.4 million |
| MillerKnoll fiscal 2024 cost of sales | $2,208.9 million |
| MillerKnoll fiscal 2024 gross margin | 39.1% |
| MillerKnoll fiscal 2024 operating earnings | $167.2 million |
| MillerKnoll fiscal 2024 net earnings attributable to the company | $82.3 million |
| Steelcase fiscal 2024 gross profit | $1,012.4 million |
| Steelcase fiscal 2024 net income | $81.1 million |
MillerKnoll’s fiscal year ended June 1, 2024. Its Form 10-K for fiscal year ended June 1, 2024 reports $3,628.4 million in net sales, down 11.2% from fiscal 2023, alongside $2,208.9 million in cost of sales and a 39.1% gross margin.
MillerKnoll reported $167.2 million in fiscal 2024 operating earnings, up 36.7% from fiscal 2023 despite the lower company-wide sales figure. Net earnings attributable to the company were $82.3 million.
Steelcase’s year ended February 23, 2024 Form 10-K reports approximately 11,300 employees globally. The filing also reports $1,012.4 million in fiscal 2024 gross profit and $81.1 million in net income; these are consolidated Steelcase measures across its products and operations.

Together, these filing figures show the scale and financial variability of major furniture companies, while their company-wide scope prevents them from being treated as office-chair-only sales, margins or employment counts.
