Furniture manufacturing spans household, institutional, office and related products, not chairs alone. In the United States, NAICS 337 includes household and institutional furniture and kitchen cabinets, office furniture and fixtures, and other furniture-related manufacturing, so the measures below should be read with each population, period and definition in view.
Key Furniture Manufacturing Statistics
The most broadly useful figures include:
- 330.7 thousand employees worked in U.S. NAICS 337 furniture and related product manufacturing in May 2026, seasonally adjusted.

U.S. Furniture Manufacturing Scale and Employment
The BLS Current Employment Statistics series places the recent U.S. NAICS 337 workforce near 330 thousand employees. The series is seasonally adjusted, and the latest two observations are preliminary.
| Period | All employees | Status |
|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | 330.7 thousand | Seasonally adjusted |
| June 2026 | 330.5 thousand | Seasonally adjusted |
| July 2026 | 328.9 thousand | Preliminary, seasonally adjusted |
| August 2026 | 330.6 thousand | Preliminary, seasonally adjusted |

The establishment count provides a different view of industry scale. BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages counted 17,964 private establishments in Q2 2025, 17,996 in Q3, 17,992 in Q4, and a preliminary 18,021 in Q1 2026.
These are private-establishment counts, while the employment series measures employees; they are not interchangeable measures of companies, plants or production capacity.
Furniture Manufacturing Jobs, Occupations and Workforce Mix
Production and nonsupervisory employees represented a large measured workforce within the subsector. BLS reported 235.9 thousand in May 2026, 233.9 thousand in June, 233.3 thousand in preliminary July, and 233.5 thousand in preliminary August, all seasonally adjusted where specified by the series.
The 2025 BLS OEWS estimates show how several occupations common in NAICS 337 establishments are distributed. These are estimates for workers employed in NAICS 337 establishments, not counts of everyone nationally with the same occupation.
| Occupation | 2025 estimated jobs |
|---|---|
| Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters | 56,210 |
| Team assemblers | 38,870 |
| Woodworking machine setters, operators and tenders except sawing | 14,590 |
| First-line production supervisors and managers | 15,350 |
| Carpenters | 11,620 |
| Upholsterers | 10,410 |
| Furniture finishers | 10,110 |

The occupation mix covers fabrication, machining, assembly, finishing, upholstery and supervision. The categories should not be added to recreate total subsector employment because they are selected occupations and may not cover every role or employment relationship.
Furniture Manufacturing Wages, Hours and Labor Costs
BLS CES averages show pay and hours for the broad NAICS 337 workforce. Average hourly earnings for all employees rose from $29.38 in May 2026 to $29.63 in June, then reached $30.21 in preliminary July and $30.20 in preliminary August.
| Measure | Earlier observation | Later observation |
|---|---|---|
| All employees: average hourly earnings | $29.38, May 2026 | $30.20, preliminary August 2026 |
| All employees: average weekly hours | 39.0, May 2026 | 39.6, preliminary July 2026 |
| Production and nonsupervisory earnings | $24.56, May 2026 | $25.34, preliminary August 2026 |
| Production and nonsupervisory hours | 38.5, May 2026 | 39.5, preliminary July 2026 |

A separate BLS OEWS reference gives a different measurement frame. In May 2022, all occupations in NAICS 337000 had a median hourly wage of $19.02, a mean hourly wage of $22.99 and an annual mean wage of $47,820; these are employer-based estimates and should not be treated as the same series as the 2026 CES averages.
Selected 2025 occupation-level medians were $20.78 per hour and $43,220 annually for furniture finishers, $22.08 and $45,930 for upholsterers, and $19.25 and $40,040 for team assemblers. These are BLS OEWS estimates for the specified occupations in the NAICS 337 population.
Furniture Manufacturing Productivity, Output and Unit Labor Cost Trends
BLS productivity data show uneven performance from 2022 through 2025. Labor productivity increased 1.5% in 2022, fell 3.0% in 2023, increased 0.8% in 2024, and fell 4.1% in 2025.
| Year | Labor productivity, annual change | Industry hours worked | Industry output | Unit labor costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | +1.5% | +1.7% | Not supplied | +10.6% |
| 2023 | -3.0% | -6.4% | -9.2% | +9.6% |
| 2024 | +0.8% | Not supplied | -6.9% | +9.2% |
| 2025 | -4.1% | Not supplied | Not supplied | +5.7% |

The measures describe different dimensions of performance. Output and hours are industry aggregates, labor productivity is output per hour, and unit labor costs track labor cost per unit of output; none of these figures alone establishes why a change occurred.
Furniture Manufacturing Company Facilities, Sales and Sourcing
Company filings add operational detail but are not industry totals. Ethan Allen reported that approximately 75% of its furniture was manufactured in North American plants in fiscal 2025.
At June 30, 2025, Ethan Allen operated 11 manufacturing facilities: seven in the United States, three upholstery plants in Mexico and one case-goods plant in Honduras. Its case-goods manufacturing facilities covered 1.306 million square feet, while upholstery facilities covered 1.362 million square feet; these property figures are not stated production capacities.
Ethan Allen reported fiscal 2025 wholesale net sales of $359.057 million and retail net sales of $523.142 million before intersegment eliminations. Consolidated fiscal 2025 net sales were $614.649 million, so these segment and consolidated figures should not be read as manufacturing-only revenue.
Steelcase’s FY 2025 key statistics reported 15 manufacturing facilities globally, service in 80 countries, $3.2 billion of trailing-twelve-month revenue and 11,300 employees. The presentation combines TTM revenue with FY 2025 company figures, so its periods and definitions should remain explicit.

Furniture Supply-Chain and Customer Concentration Statistics
Steelcase reported that 78% of TTM revenue came from the Americas and 22% from international markets as of May 30, 2025. Its FY 2025 customer mix allocated 36% of revenue to large corporate customers, 14% to small and medium businesses, 17% to education, 9% to healthcare, 2% to consumer, 9% to government, and 14% to owned dealers and Designtex.
Those categories are Steelcase-defined company revenue groups, not global furniture-market shares. The revenue mix also should not be interpreted as a measure of manufacturing geography.
Hooker Furnishings reported a more concentrated sourcing profile in its fiscal 2026 filing. For the 52 weeks ended February 1, 2026, Vietnam supplied 87% of the company’s import purchases, while its top five suppliers accounted for 69% of import purchases.
For domestic upholstered-furniture manufacturing, Hooker Furnishings said its five largest domestic upholstery suppliers represented 30% of raw-material purchases in fiscal 2026, and one supplier represented 8%. The same filing reported that the top five customers accounted for 26% of consolidated sales, with one customer contributing approximately 9%.
These Hooker Furnishings percentages describe one company’s import, purchasing and sales populations. They are not global supply shares, and they do not by themselves demonstrate a causal relationship between supplier concentration and manufacturing performance.
