55 Furniture Import Statistics: Global Trade and Supplier Data

Furniture imports are measured differently depending on the classification used. The broad SITC group 821 recorded $222.9 billion in global imports in 2022, while the narrower HS 9403 heading covers furniture and parts not elsewhere specified in chapter 94.

The figures below make the geography, period, units, and classification explicit so trade values are not confused with retail sales.

Global Furniture Import Scale and Definitions

The broadest supplied measure is the United Nations Comtrade annual publication’s SITC group 821, which covers furniture and parts thereof and stuffed furnishings. It recorded $222.9 billion in global imports in 2022, a measure for the World rather than a single national market.

Global SITC group 821 imports increased 1.1% in 2022 compared with 2021. This is an observed annual trade change, not a forecast, and the classification is not identical to the narrower HS 9403 values used for the country comparisons.

HS 9403 is a specific furniture-and-parts heading within chapter 94. It should not be described as all furniture, all home furnishings, or all chapter-94 imports.

The country figures in the sections below are WITS/UN Comtrade values in thousands of current U.S. dollars. They are customs-style trade values, not retail sales, and partner rows are presented as values rather than calculated market shares.

These are partner-reported trade values for HS 9403. “Other Asia, nes” is a WITS partner aggregate category, so it is not a single country.

France’s other supplied origin values were $132,594.75 thousand from the United Kingdom, $120,420.89 thousand from Lithuania, and $112,085.32 thousand from Turkey in 2023. The data therefore captures substantial European sourcing alongside China and other non-European origins.

UAE Furniture Import Statistics and Supplier Diversity

The United Arab Emirates imported $1,199,712.13 thousand of HS 9403 furniture and parts in 2023. China supplied $366,553.37 thousand, while Italy supplied $194,066.64 thousand.

UAE total HS 9403 imports 1,199,712.13

Italy 194,066.64
Turkey 57,582.93

Malaysia 52,485.71
India 50,423.49

Source: United Arab Emirates Furniture and parts thereof, n.e.s. in chapter 94 imports by country | 2023 | Data.

Other reported UAE supplier values were $50,100.82 thousand from Poland, $38,067.73 thousand from the United Kingdom, $35,944.53 thousand from Lithuania, and $33,805.14 thousand from Vietnam in 2023.

The UAE figures show a diverse set of listed origins, but diversity here means multiple reported supplier values, not a calculated concentration index or market-share estimate. Comparisons with the global SITC 821 figure should also be avoided because SITC 821 and HS 9403 are different product classifications.

The U.S. Census describes merchandise import datasets as including HTSUSA commodity codes, country of origin, quantity, shipping weight, and multiple value fields. That framework reinforces the need to distinguish customs-value import statistics from retail sales and other market measures.
